Hi friends and welcome to Part 2 of my garden tour series! If you haven’t seen Part 1, head over here. I loved sharing our front garden and today we’ll be focused on our back garden. All of these beautiful film photos were taken by Ariel Min. Thank you, Ariel!
If you’re new here, hi! I’m Kelli and I live with my husband and cat, Peaches, in coastal Southern California. I’m obsessed with gardening and am on a mission to give away 1 million flowers (with the help of many lovely volunteers in my area). The flowers primarily go to Meals on Wheels seniors, neighbors who are ill or grieving the loss of a loved one, and seniors at local senior homes. Thanks for following along on my flower-growing and giving journey!
Today, we’re starting the garden tour with the 7 raised garden beds just outside the living room. When I first started growing cut flowers, we built 3 long raised beds made out of Redwood. Soon after, we took out a big chunk of grass next to them and created 4 more beds. I grow annual cut flowers in 5 beds and perennials in the other 2. When Ariel came to take photos it was summertime and we had a variety of flowers blooming in this area including:
Cosmos
Strawflower
Dahlias
Scabiosa
Queen Anne’s Lace
You can see many of them below.
Below you’ll see another section of the garden with a wide variety of plants, vegetables, and fruit growing. My husband, Billy, recently built this trellis and I’m in love with it.
We also have 4 raised beds just past the section above with more food including tomatoes, herbs, blueberries, lettuce, and more. In addition to these beds, we have a variety of fruit trees including cherry, avocado, lime, lemon, apricot, and peach.
When we moved into the house, it had a bit of a slope where it was difficult to plant anything, so we created a more even surface with a retaining wall and waterfall (my favorite feature in the garden!) with plants like dahlias and roses mixed in that I can also cut from when doing flower giveaways.
Thanks for coming along on the tour today! While I’m no gardening expert, I’m happy to answer any questions you have. I would also love to see your garden if you feel so inclined to share :).
Stunning garden!
Absolutely gorgeous. And how fantastically uplifting to give your flowers away to worthy causes. Really like what you said about how you're pulled to come to substack. I just joined and feel the same way.
